Footbridge – Bellandur

The footbridge spans 55m and connects at four points, linking service roads and edges. The main span works like a spine and rib cage. Stairs and escalators support the structure at four locations. Shallow risers ease movement, and a bicycle channel is provided. The frame allows a future tensile roof.

Master plan

The design draws from a reptile skeleton. It creates a strong yet flexible system. The rib cage is repeated and tied together by a central spine. A continuous ring binds the frame. This structure distributes loads efficiently, while keeping the form light, open, and visually connected.

Inspired by nature, the bridge combines structural efficiency with a bold, sculptural spatial experience.

Design Approach

The design is based on a clear and simple idea. A series of tubular ribs are repeated to create strength and rhythm. These ribs form both the structure and the space. The bridge is easy to read and easy to use. Access points are clear and well placed. Stairs are gentle and comfortable to climb. The bright color improves visibility in the city. The system uses modular parts, making it easy to build. The structure also allows for a future tensile roof. User feedback has been very positive, with many seeing it as a ‘dinosaur’ ribcage and a memorable landmark.
